About Telehealth Counseling

According to the American Telemedicine Association, telehealth is the practice and delivery of health services via technology, which includes videoconferencing, electronic communications such as text and email, and telephone. Telemedicine is growing rapidly and becoming widely available across the United States. Telemental health comes under the umbrella of telehealth, and is defined as technologically conducted mental health assessments, treatment, interventions, and education. Telehealth services can be provided in a variety of settings, such as hospitals and clinics, long-term care facilities, schools, and private residences. Telehealth practitioners include doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and educators.

The NYUCI telehealth program uses a videoteleconferencing technology called VSee. Each participant in the program—counselor, caregiver, family member(s)—use the same service, using their computers, laptops, iPads® or smartphones. All family sessions are scheduled via an online reservation system, and all participants sign into the service on the scheduled date, at the appointed time
