Over the past years, the developers of the NYUCI have begun to offer the delivery of the NYUCI intervention via online videoconferencing. While similar in many ways to meeting with family in person, conducting the NYUCI via videoconferencing has some significant differences that requires additional training—especially in terms of clinical considerations, since counselors are not in the same physical space as the caregiver or family members.
Delivery via online videoconferencing offers many benefits in terms of accessibility and inclusion of distant family members. By making the NYUCI available via online videoconferencing, the hope is that many more people around the country and world, especially in rural areas, will receive its benefits. It is efficient and practical, with no need for anyone to worry about traffic or transportation problems. And many families say they feel more comfortable and relaxed receiving counseling and support in their own home.
To prepare for this program, counselors go through a specialized video-based, online training program and certification exam on conducting the NYUCI. After learning the specifics of the NYUCI program itself, counselors also learn how to use Zoom, a HIPAA-compliant videoconferencing technology, to deliver the NYUCI via online videoconferencing, how to schedule online video sessions, and how to bring together both caregivers and family members regardless of their location.
